"The Burmese Harp": A great children's literature | Movie Recommandation

Review of "The Harp of Burma", an anti-war film from Japan in 1956.

Before I watch this movie, based on the title I thought it was a Western movie. But then the characters suddenly spoke Japanese, and I realized it is from Japan. XD I looked it up on internet and found out that the original work was children's literature.

(Doesn't it be a bit weird that children's literature descripts about wars and deaths...?)

Music and war, a perfect fusion

"The Burmese Harp" is an anti-war film from Japan in 1956. It tells the story of how Private Mizushima failed to persuade a Japanese soldier unit to surrender after the end of World War II. Then, all the Japanese soldiers died in front of Mizushima. Mizushima, who survived, wandered around, unable to bear seeing countless corpses of his compatriots on the battlefield, and decided to bury the remains of his dead compatriots. This will be his responsibility and job from now on.

At the beginning of the movie, a group of soldiers marched briskly while playing the harp. I was a little confused, "Aren't they on the battlefield? The atmosphere of their unit is more like... going on a picnic?" Of course they knew that this was a battlefield, but this did not contradict with their entertainment through music. It can be said to be the tenderness of the battlefield.

While watching the movie, the sound of the harp carried all kinds of emotions. Sadness, mourning, the warmth and coldness of human nature. I was deeply moved by the end.

As a children's literature, the themes it carries are truly great and tender, and are likely to touch people of all ages.
